When JJ was in MM I always said she can't sing. At all. Now she seems to be holding notes decently. If she was still in MM she'd be getting solo lines right now.

Please, she wouldn't be getting solo lines because she can sing or not. Linlin could always sing and she never got solo lines. It's a pushing/popularity factor and back then "the Chinese" weren't pushed nor were they popular enough. Maybe they would be popular today, but I kinda doubt it.
I wouldn't say she's gotten much better at all since her time in MM. But singing songs that are too high for you, won't work to your advantage. But more importantly, the lack of emotion is kinda... bad. Yeah.

Looks like
非唱不可 is a foreign language singing competition.

^^ "Not Sing/Can't Sing"?
Sounds like an idol contest.
But it's Junjun, and that was a first-rate performance, so it's good!

I don't know what the phrase translates to in Chinese, but if you were to translate that literally in Thai (which has surprisingly many similar phrase structures) it'd mean something like "Impossible not to sing"/"Can't just not sing" (i.e., "If you're here you have to sing" or "I can't help but to sing"... depending on context).
It's a benefit concert. The first prize is an iPad Mini and an electric keyboard. Looks like something that's fun but popular rather than something for prestige.

Ogawa Makoto tweeted that she was suffering a hoarse throat after the first day of practice. With all the problems that Tsunku and Takahashi Ai have had, I hope she is okay.

I wondered if that was how it would really translate (非唱不可 seems like it could semi-literally translate to "Not sing? Can't do that!") -- that makes a lot more sense all around.

I'm not surprised!
By the way, i had a dream about Junjun and Linlin last night -- I don't remember the details, except that I was in a city that looked kind of Italian (where they both lived, apparently), and Junjun's father was explaining that she had been so traumatized by her time in MoMusu that she was still coming out of a coma that she'd been in for the past few years.
Aika must have made her cry once too often!
