No, she introduced herself as "Suzuki Kanon with a big body build." which definitely is because she got that attention on TV. Not a bad thing either, she has a bigger body build than most girls in the group. Doesn't equal to fat at all.

Yeah, the word he used was "gatai" and that's body build. She has a big body build. Some have a good body build doing a certain sports, and some (Reina) have a smaller body build.
If he was to call her fat he'd have said something else (debu/futotteru/pocchari/etc) but he didn't. He wouldn't either, because for the simple fact that she isn't and doesn't look fat either, especially not in that outfit. She just has... you know. Curves. It's not that common over there.

Right.
Because being surprised that she's bigger built than she seems when sitting down, does equal to saying "Wow you're fat!!!"
I'm not saying he's being nice, not at all. He's hardly known for being the ~nice type~ but he didn't actually insult her as much as pointing something out in, as you can tell by the tone of his voice, quite a surprised matter.

Having that said, it's likely that he apologized either way to her (and Kudou, and Ikuta) once the cameras were off anyway, as that's what they do over there (don't know about US). Especially those who have mean/blunt images/characters. So I'm fairly sure no one has any hard feelings whatsoever.

Plus the whole point of most variety shows in Japan is to make fun of the talents on the show anyway. So in that sense, Zukki did a good job (intentionally or not). During Okajo Makoto got made fun of for being "poor" and on Utaban Kago (or was it Tsuji?) got repeatedly made fun of for being bigger as well. Part of Karoin's iconic status is that she's "Johnson", a nickname coincidentally coined by a comedian.

Part of being able to be laughed at or with makes you memorable (see Momochi, Sayu when she was her narcissist/poison tongued character). Also, Mechaike/Sayu herself did a really good job of not doing the whole "Here's Michishige Sayumi (the only member anyone really knows is part of MM.) and the current little girls she's in a group with". It was much more about the other girls.

For as much as Sayu has said she loves herself most and that she (and Reina for that matter) love the camera on them I think Sayu's true colors are showing increasingly more with the way she understands that it's okay to be in the back a little as long as the group as a whole is shining.

I think even if it was fat (which it wasn't really like you said) this is a good thing. More attention and she is taking the pointy thorn out of an insult. Just like Sayu does when she is on TV she driving into the skid so that the easy jokes (the ones about appearance) are out of the way and she can really take advatage of the attention to show how funny she can be. Good for Zukki :D
