Normally O-shougatsu is what I hear/read people refer to right around New Year's as, when they start mentioning Hatsumoude (first shrine visit of the New Year)

Tsunku wrote, either on twitter or his blog, that he was working on the new single recently (and if my aging memory is functioning correctly, I believe a few of the girls blogged about recording?). So, it could likely be released anywhere from February to April We've had similar lengthy waits for a single to release, only we've been spoiled this last year with relatively little down-time between singles.

Also, the fan recordings combined with this media footage is making me super excited for the DVD release already

just got back from Budokan. they announced that what is love is being released as part of the new single, which will be released next year. they also asked the fans at Budokan to look forward to the MV and we were a part of the recording of the mv today. Sayu said she wants those akb fans to watch this mv and see how much more fun morning musume fans at budokan are having. what is love is so fun live.

My guess would be late Feb or March for the new single. "Next spring" pretty much just confirms not January and not June. Could be at any point between February and May though. March sounds the most likely but at the same time that's quite some time away so mid/late February feels better. But who knows lol.

The text in that definition was short enough that for you to quote the entire thing.

新年。初春(はつはる)。正月。《季 新年》

It specifically mentions the Lunar New Year as one of the definitions. Not to mention, using a dictionary to argue a fine grammatical point is an exercise in futility. I mean じゃーん！...convinced?

The idea is that prior to the Meiji restoration, Japan, like the rest of Asia, observed the Lunar calendar cycle, and that the New Year was typically around what we would call February. Couple that with Japan being an agrarian economy at that time, and wishing for a New Spring made sense. That's why 新春 is made of those characters. So, fast forward to now, and the Gregorian calendar has incongruously co-opted 新春 for its own new year, but the word can also still be used to allude to around early February-ish.
