That's... an odd conclusion to take ^^;
What the survey tells us is that there is in a fact, a substantial percentage of men&women over 20years of age in Japan that still do not have any dating experience. It doesn't tell us anything about any leaning bias the various subsets sampled within the "over20" umbrella might have however.
I don't think you can just take the total result and apply that percentage number broadly into a very specific subset (idols, in this case) without considering the possibility of that subset's bias going the opposite way of the majority. That 28% have gotta come from somewhere, right?

Perhaps someone else can expand on this? It's been quite a while since I took statistics

I was thinking the same thing, that idols aren't representative of the population. They are prettier than average, but they are also not supposed to date, and those that are in school are busier than their peers.

Some of the girls that came in when they're a little older might have dated before they joined though. Haruna was 15-16 when she joined and she's a fashionable girl, so it wouldn't be surprising if she had a boyfriend at some point before.

I think that for a lot of people, it's a lot easier, more fun, and more relaxing to hang out in a mixed male-female group, as opposed to casual dating. But relationships do develop out of mixed-group socializing, and I imagine that happens with idols. How often? My own inclination would be to say that it's fairly common, and that the people involved are generally pretty discreet about it. But that's really just my opinion.

Well, I think most of them "date".but Going out with a guy doesn't really mean anything sometime. They might be just good friends. Nothing is wrong or right. Screw that boyfriend rules. If cute and bk continues, I seriously hope they remove that rules for them. Most of them are over 20 already! They shouldn't be single forever. :fear:

Yeah, I don't think anybody here thinks that the 28% corresponds exactly with the pool of H!P members. The point of that link in this conversation is just to say that it's not exceedingly rare for Japanese girls to not date. It's not like, say, Southern California or whatever where the peer pressure to date is so overwhelming that a no-date clause would be completely unworkable. It's possible that every one of the girls falls in the 28%, it's possible that they all fall in the 72%. :fear: Beyond that, statistics tells us nothing. Some stuff to consider though is:

* These girls have tremendous financial and career-goal pressure to not date. That is, if you're Eripon, and the goal of your life is to be an idol, and you know that that goal will be instantly destroyed by getting caught going on a date, and you know about the tragedy of Kago where her fucking lowlife scum jealous "friends" had no problem selling her out the instant they got the chance, it might give you pause before you start sneaking around thinking you're slick.

* These girls are on average way better looking than your normal Japanese girl, and about 60 million Japanese dudes would love to be their first boyfriends, so, that is one point that might make it harder to stay unattached.

* They are on average younger than "in their 20's" so all other things being equal, they are more likely to still be virginal angels than the "in their 20's" demographic.

* They've all been "turned out" by Yossi as part of their initial indoctrination. "Who needs men when we have each other?" Hatake's randomly walking around the compound buck naked has also been quite successful in turning them off of men for life. :puke: :wasntme:

Thank you, that's what I thought too.
Although, for the girls's sake, I hope the last point isn't true. Nobody needs that kind of mental scarring :fear: XD

No? I thought I was her all these years. Will have to read that thread.

Anyway, I think what really matters is if they are caught in a scandal, dating and stuff, they might loose their job.
But I think H!P let the girl choose. Love or work. Man or Fans.
This is actually based on the fact that I thought it was Miyabi in the kissing picture though. My imagination: she chose to stay in the business, gave up the guy, they demoted her from center a few singles and when everyone seemed to forget, she's back in center again. Aya stayed silent, kept her love life low profile and continued being an idol.
Other girls probably chose love, at least Mari (and I think Fujimoto) said so that they had the choice and that's what they chose. They could have been forced to say so but they might have not too.

Anyway, why are we discussing this? I thought the no-dating rule is a given when one enters the entertainment world. And yes, some girls break it, either they get caught or not.

I'm pretty sure it was Miyabi in those things too. Thing is, THOSE photos and vids weren't leaked to any tabloid, it was all on the net. Kanna's scandal got published lol.

For me, that sums up their attitude towards the no dating rule: if you can't help it, just don't get caught. However, it's mighty difficult for these girls not to get caught because there are fans who follow them around. Airi's an exception because she's not actually dating the guy (therefore did not break any rules), but still had to apologize. For most of them, I would like to think they choose not to go out because there is always a risk they could lose their job (or get demoted or whatever). It's a risk versus gain scenario where they can assert their right to go out but risk losing their careers, or, they can just wait till they graduate (or maybe even choose to graduate), and have all the freedom to go out with as many guys as they wish. Most would probably choose their careers over going out.
