To get better when being a beginner, and getting more used to things, the best way to do it is to mimic others. Same thing with singing, to get better you start out with aiming to be like others and while doing that you're bound to realize that you want/can put your own tone on the whole thing. Especially in showbiz, where the whole thing is about standing out (which I'm sure the girls are told continuously), I doubt any of them think "I want to be just like her." and then aim to be like a certain senpai. I think it's very healthy to have goals like "I want to be at the same level as her," though.
