This makes me feel like pedophilia is accepted in Japan... At least in a "you can look but don't touch" kind of way.

Is this something (lolicon) that western fans despise but the Japanese see as normal?

Let's just be clear.. afaik acts of pedophilia are not accepted in Japan, just like most anywhere decent.
Also imo Lolicon≠Pedophilia, or at least the usage of that word in Japan is far more broadly defined than and has less criminal connotations.

Like old men lusting after teenage girls. You know the criticizeverythingharopuro? I should stop reading that one. I have a whole bunch of them and just read all of them. But the person on that one has a big problem with the girls being young and always uses the term lolicon negatively.

Also, AFAIK, "lolicon" is more someone who's into young 2D girls than real girls. It's not always the case, but I've seen it used more within, say, the anime community than the idol community.

I could be wrong, though. I think it probably originated as an otaku term but I'm not 100% sure.

In the USA the two words are the same, people try to say it's the different (Those who are lolicons) but average people will see it as the same. I BELIEVE this is true of Japan as well.

It;s like... everyone thinks because I like Japanese music, I know all the anime theme songs and stuff. I know hardly any - as I don't follow Seiyuu (I only really like Maya Sakamoto) and really only know themes done by regular musicians. But to everyone EVERYONE liking Japanese music = liking anime music. It's the same to them.

I think both things are gross (You can like Haruka as an idol and not be a lolicon... jesus) but there is a difference in the two words. So much so, it's beter to have lolicon fans than pedophile fans... if we have to choose one of the two.

Just throwing this out there, but the Japanese word for pedophile is 小児性愛者 (shouniaisha). My guess is that it has much stronger implications than lolicon does.

To me lolicon will always be an anime related term and thus used to refer to 2D girls even if that's not the case. I haven't really seen people on 2ch use "lolicon" much, though, but like I said before that doesn't really mean anything.

I think lolicon is more someone who is attracted to little girls, but who wouldn't necessarily harm them in any way. Yes, the attraction is sexual, but someone who would violate little girls would probably be called a pedophile rather than a lolicon (who is just attracted to them).

Not trying to justify it but. That's my explanation on about 3 hours of sleep.
