Nakano Sunplaza redevelopment scrapped; Nakano Ward considers temporary use of first-floor hall until new plan finalized

On the 27th, Nakano Ward, Tokyo, announced it would consider temporary use for part of the closed Nakano Sun Plaza complex, whose redevelopment plan has been scrapped.
However, the ward has not abandoned its policy of rebuilding the facility itself, intending this temporary use only until a new plan is finalized.
◆The First Floor to be Used for Dance and Anime Initiatives
The ward revealed its policy for the temporary use of Nakano Sun Plaza at the ward assembly's construction committee meeting that day.
The areas under consideration for temporary use are the first-floor entrance hall and the outside plaza facing the facility.
According to materials submitted to the ward assembly on the 27th, the south plaza facing the facility would be provided as a space for dancers and musicians to practice and perform. It would also be used for anime business promotions.
Additionally, advertisements from anime businesses would be displayed on the walls of the first-floor entrance hall. Plans for temporary use as a parking lot and loading area were also presented.
Through this temporary use, the ward aims to promote culture like anime, provide opportunities for young people to take on challenges, and curb financial burdens.
◆Ward Mayor: “Not Realistic” for Reuse
Nakano Sunplaza closed in July 2023 due to deterioration.
At a March press conference this year, Mayor Sakai indicated intentions to reconsider redevelopment but stated that reusing the facility was “unrealistic” due to factors like repair costs.
At a May resident briefing, the ward also explained that reuse would cost over 10 billion yen and fail to realize urban development concepts like improving convenience and accessibility.
◆Residents Call to “Keep Sunplaza”
However, opinions among residents are divided regarding the redevelopment of Nakano Sunplaza.
At the May resident briefing, participants voiced opinions such as “Redevelopment is unavoidable” and “Clean the interior with renovation as a premise.”
An online survey conducted in April by former Nakano Ward Assembly member Ryosuke Ide also highlighted opinions calling for the facility's preservation, such as “Nakano's unique character will be lost” and “We want Sunplaza to remain.”
◆Agreement with Developer Terminated Due to Soaring Construction Costs
Regarding the redevelopment of Nakano Sunplaza, developers including Nomura Real Estate initially proposed a plan centered around a single super high-rise building approximately 250 meters tall.
However, soaring construction costs pushed the total project cost to over 350 billion yen, nearly double the initial estimate. At a March press conference this year, Nakano Ward Mayor Naoto Sakai indicated his intention to review the plan.
On June 30th, Nakano Ward terminated its agreement with the developers, including Nomura Real Estate. The ward is currently holding repeated discussions with residents and local organizations to review the plan.https://topics.smt.docomo.ne.jp/article ... kyo-431405https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOCC ... 0C2000000/

Thanks for the Nakano Sunplaza situation update. It sounds like a bit of a pickle. I wonder why it would be so expensive to renovate the existing structure. The proposed 250m high building sounds like it could be a bit ... oppressive. If memory serves, idols were very fond of the original building.

Girls2 have released a cover with Gorie of "Momorio Kataomoi".
Its always interesting to me how Hello Project is still very anti-trend.
Any other agency would have let their own groups do this instead or at least try to capitalise on the 2000s trends your Heisei idols popularised.

Pretty cute, though not my favorite cover. But man, it's been forever since I've seen Gorie.
