I remember Chisato talking about when they started to get free talks and not scripts MCs. So I guess it might be a way of them to... slightly improve. S/mileage should definitely be at the level by now where they can talk without much of a script. They'd still need topics of course, as they're no way near the level of Sayumi/H!P Kids or anything, but still. They've done a lot of events. Events bring a lot of practice for talking after all.

Yeah I remember that too. Something about saying she didn't like foreigners but I think she thought that foreigners wouldn't like her...or something?

i think Dawa said "kirai desu", but of course with vague Japanese grammar that could have meant she hated foreigners themselves, or interpreting further into the context (as it was later clarified what she meant) she hated running into them because she gets all flustered. but yeah, i think she apologized regardless of what she meant, which is the professional thing to do.

i don't think they script MC answers exactly (i say answers because segments/intros/questions are definitely scripted), but i've gotten the impression that the girls know what they have to talk about ahead of time so they have a little time to think over their answer. this is probably only some MC's, though, some answers seem entirely on-the-spot and are a great way of telling which girls are naturally good at thinking of things to talk about. :3

Kana apologizes for making everyone worry at the concert. She says shes sorry for not attending the handshake event too.

To elaborate on Kananan's incident...

The "local city quiz" featured a question about Kumagaya's specialty shaved ice, "Jigen," which is made with matcha milk and azuki beans. The members were asked if it cost A: 680 yen or B: 930 yen. All members but Kana selected B. When asked why she selected A, Kana said, "Well Saitama has an image of being cheap." According to fan reports, she immediately realized that what she had said was offensive and tried to apologize. She appeared distracted throughout the rest of the concert, and started crying at the final MC because she said she could see that some people in the audience had gotten mad and insulted. The other members tried to console her, and the audience did, as well, since most of them apparently didn't take much offense to it, but she wouldn't stop crying afterward and missed the handshake as a result.

None of the fans reports suggest that anyone was upset in the audience, and Take-chan laughed when she said it. When she started crying, she reportedly said, "It doesn't matter! We don't care!" Kanon, the other Saitama native, apparently said, "If anyone is mad it's just because us Saitama people have a lot of pride, but it's fine." No one who knows Kana would seriously think she meant any harm by it, and her reaction is probably more than enough penance for what she said.

Ayacho not liking foreigners made me like her more. But she has always been very nice to me during handshakes. It's just something that keeps on hanging out there in the foreign fandom, I always laugh when it comes up in conversation or here on the forum.

As for Kanana, I think it's just her being silly. You can try to train her as much as you want it will always remain something that she's going to do, both the remarks and panicking afterwards. Somebody just has to say to her that she doesn't have to worry. There will be more people that are going to like it when she just flaps out silly remarkts then that there are people that take offence.

I thought the whole Ayacho thing was that they mis-interpreted/translated the question as "What would you say to a foreigner when you meet a foreigner," when it was actually "What would a foreigner say to you when you meet a foreigner" or something like that, and Ayacho thinks that the foreigner would say (to her) "I don't like you (Kirai desu)" and ended up thinking that she didn't like foreigners.

The fact that you're all still trying to figure it out, years later, proves that it was a non-event lost in translation. Just like most of these "offensive" comments made by utterly inoffensive teenaged girls who are just trying to come up with interesting answers to stupid questions while standing on stage under hot lights and in front of thousands of people.

Hm, by the way, what is this thing about Nakky and Hitler?

I think they were asked about "A Great Person in History" or something and she picked Hitler.

Edit:
It was "World's Great People" on a TV show called Yorosen. She said, "That great man is Hitler." (She called him Hitler-ojisan [Uncle Hitler])
