Never said anything about appreciating vocal talent, I only adressed the adding of digital effects of any kind to an idol's voice (under the collective term of "Autotune").
There were/are lots of great voices out there. It's a huge idol industry.

All artists that are not releasing any new material anymore/are on hiatus (unless you count LoVendoЯ ). I'm talking about the current idol industry and current trends.
Also, just to take one of your examples: Reina. She got a lot of voice processing while in Morning Musume from One-Two-Three onward. Tsunku said it himself during Tsunclub.

Uhm..okay? Was unaware this was a competition nor was I trying to prove anything. Just having a discussion.

Yep: exactly. You may not like them, but at least be aware of them.

esm wrote:Autotune is not just a handicap for singers that can't sing well. I mean, it helps them, but it's also part of the style that's popular right now. Morning Musume still delivers great live performances despite the autotune here and there in the songs; you still get lines that are vocally demanding and have no autotune. (...)They don't use autotune blindly just to make up for lack of vocal abilities but because it actually sounds good. I don't feel that H!P is overdoing it.

That's what I'm getting at.

The fact that both a-sides are almost equally liked according to the poll just shows how strong of a single this is.

Autotune: I actually don't hear it as vocal enhancement to make a singer's voice sound like it's in tune. We'll probably have that kind of autotune in a few years - something that tunes a singer's voice so seamlessly that you don't even notice it.

But that's not what we have now. Autotune as it exists today just jumps out at me as a kind of cheesy pseudo-70s special effect, a lot like flanging (which it strongly resembles, at least to my ears), or even that mouth-tube thing that Peter Frampton was notorious for using.

And that's not necessarily bad. When it's used as a special effect (and not in a rather naive attempt to "make the singer's voice sound better") it can be pretty good, in its own pseudo-70s-special-effects way. I think (or at least I'd like to think) that a lot of Jpop and Kpop producers and audio engineers do just that -- push it far enough so that the flanginess comes out, and it functions as a clearly identifiable effect, rather than some kind of not-very-believable "voice enhancement".
