One of the Armenian churches in the area was having an Armenian food festival today, so I took a break in the middle of several hours of proofreading to have some shish kebab, pilaf, lahmajoun, eetch, yalanchi sarma…. This is my kind of comfort food, and it was all very good. The lahmajoun especially was first-rate.

They were also having a bazaar, selling such things as baked goods, religious books, and gifts. In the book section they had free Bibles and New Testaments, so I grabbed a nice hardbound Bible in Western Armenian. (What I really need now is one in grabar, Classical Armenian.) I also bought something in the Christmas boutique: a set of 40 wooden Armenian alphabet blocks. It was only $20, so I couldn't resist.

Here are a couple of ugly little pieces of paper that I bought on eBay. I've been trying to find things like these for 15 years, and I am SO happy to have them at long last!

At the end of the 19th century, there was an active community of Volapükists in Amoy (Xiamen), China. In 1895, a tea merchant and Volapük teacher named Yang Yen-Nung printed and distributed small, stamp-like pieces of paper that were to serve as a form of international money (mon bevünetik). The item on the left is one of these, with a denomination of one centime. The item on the right, unfortunately damaged, is an advertising label for Yang Yen-Nung's teahouse, Wen-Pu.

Book:
"Secrets of the Japanese Art of Warfare from the School of Certain Victory" by Yamamoto Kansuke translated by Thomas Cleary.

Some thoughts about the book:
Spoiler: show
It has many similarities with Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings, which is to be expected, as all of the old warrior traditions have a common root and were honed by years and years of warfare (replacing things that no longer worked, and retaining those that did). However, much as I like this book, it's still, like the Book of Five Rings, something that should be understood in the context in which it was written. It's a war manual/instruction booklet, for people who've been training for war, not for some wannabe samurai, as a few of my colleagues thought it was.

Still, for history buffs, it's a great read. Especially those interested in the topic of ancient warfare.

I've just finished building the Gundam kit, and most of the games. Recovering from an ACL Reconstruction surgery gave me a lot of idle time.

I bought a new pair of winter boots. I've never spent $150 on a pair of boots/shoes before.

I'm a sucker for Scandinavian (and Japanese) marketing.
