I don't follow AKB at all so forgive my possible ignorance...

...but this whole thing looks horribly complicated.

What does 'draft' even mean? What's 'kennin' ?

How is someone supposed to get into this group faced with this 'roster'?

-Draft members are girls who were chosen directly through an audition to be part of the team (rather from the kenkyuusei aka trainees). After a certain period of time making themselves known through an internet TV show, the teams themselves (specifically the team captains aided by some members) picked members among that roster of girl to add to their team. This happened rather recently, so the draft members had not been really integrated in the teams theater shows yet.

-Kennin means, or at least, if often translated by "concurrent position". Symbolizes a member who is concurrently a member of two teams. Often, one of these two memberships is a temporary measure, in an attempt to give the girl more spotlight/give the other team a new element to play with/learn from. However, Matsui Jurina's concurrency in Team K has been lasting for several years at this point.

-About how to get into the group.. it *does* get intimidating. I advise not trying to learn everyone's names. That's pointless. Some people know them (at some point, I knew every AKB48 member's names) but with the frequent additions, grads, shuffles, concurrent positions, it's almost impossible. There are however several methods I can advise to become more familiar with them if that was your intention (I don't think it is but it might be helpful for anyone:

-One method is looking at all the stage shows in their chronological order (+ maybe the revival of said stage shows that happened in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and I expect another one to maybe happen this year? unsure.) Looking at them with a setlist specifying members for unit songs helps. It helps learn the names of graduated members and the history of the teams, and notice members you might like and then can look out for. You can do the same with PVs, especially the PVs for b-sides who include lesser known members.

-Another one is looking at the quantity of subtitled variety shows and dramas and the anime. Variety shows, especially, sometimes take the time to focus on less popular members. For instance I knew next to nothing about SKE48 and I've been watching Ebi Friday Night religiously and I learned a bunch of member's names (plus, it's rather funny). I think that's the best method in and of itself.

-Another method which is not that good is, taking a look at the team picture of each team, picking a favorite or a few favorites based on looks and just sticking with following these girls no matter what. What always happens though is, when you do watch shows or whatever, there's always, this girl you thought wasn't so pretty that you end up liking, or in the end the girl you thought looked cute is not that great a performer.

-Then, if you speak Japanese and like dating sims, the game AKB1/149 (PSP, Vita and PS3) is a good way to get familiar with the girls. It's not super accurate right now because a ton of these members graduated by now and a lot were added, but it's a good start and you'll never forget the girl's name after. I learned the 2010 roster of AKB48 that way.

That's about all I can think of.

Then what's the point in having trainees?

Also, what's the point in having teams if they're going to be shuffled around so regularly?
Doesn't that greatly damage the teams established identities?
Or is it more analogous with the concept of a sports team, where the players change from year to year, yet the team remains?

Trainees have their own stage shows (and as such, are kind of a team of their own) and traditionally fill in for absent members (though in AKB's case, with the size of the teams, this doesn't happen anymore, but for other groups that is still their roles). Senbatsu members are frequently absent from theater performances because of TV shows and other such things.

The parallel with sports team is interesting; I guess it's a bit like that.

There were 4 years between the start of the group and the first shuffle, and three years before the next shuffle. SKE48 had only one shuffle, NMB48 never had one. HKT48.. had one recently but their teams mostly weren't changed in this one.

One reason for shuffling is that, as was the case with Team K this time, if most of the popular members from a team graduate, the team will heavily lose popularity and become the underdog team. Ideally, popular members need to be well spread around between each team.

Another reason is that shuffling team will create new dynamics, pushing members to try new things and learn. That's also the reason for concurrent positions. The teams do have identities (especially teams A K and B) but by shuffling members from one team to another, it's forcing them to try a new "style". A has the more mature, sexy, beautiful image, more dignified. Team K has a more cool, bad ass, rocker image. Team B has a cute, fresh, girly image. That's the case for most of their Team songs, but not always. Team B got something mature with Romance Kenjuu, and Team A something super cute with Kiss Made Countdown. Still, as a general rule they do have an identity, and that's why for instance Watanabe Mayu changed her image drastically once she was in Team A, becoming able to center songs like "Ikiru Koto" that are miles away from her cute image. It made her mature as a performer, who now has a wider range of styles she can do.. and I think that's good for the girls (but that's how I see it personally)

I think any fan is going to agree that this shuffle came way too soon after the 2012 shuffle and the 2013 SKE shuffle. They could've just announced a few transfers instead of shuffling everything like that. I do agree. But I also think it's true that the teams are better balanced now. Especially in AKB48. I think there are too many popular girls with concurrent positions though, but that's just my opinion. Jurina, Haruppi and Sayanee *all* in Team K is a bit abusive the way I see it. Any Team K song is going to be centered by non AKB members. That's a bit weird. But concurrencies are usually temporary. Hopefully they push Yuihan, Kitarie and Kojimako more than the "exchange students".
