I should really get back to drinking cold tap water (instead ot the cheap bottled water I'm currently buying just becaause it's convenient). But more than that, I need to stock up on mochi. XD

They're replacing/refitting the full-scale RX-78 Gundam at Odaiba Diver City. It's going to be an RX-0 Unicorn…

Image

I don't know how I feel about this — the gee-whiz factor of the Unicorn is impressive, but classic Gundam is classic.

I always drink tap water. Well, 99% of the time. Sometimes I need a new water bottle... (I don't drink out of cups because I'm prone to spilling them everywhere .)

I have to be very careful about spilling things - I can knock something over just by reaching in its general direction. That's one of the reasons why I always wear black (besides just being generally pretentious) - it's a lot harder to notice when I've spilled coffee all over my shirt. XD

I subscribed to DIRECTV NOW when it was launched earlier this year and got the $35/month promotional price "for life". It seemed like a good deal at the time, and I wanted to help prove that cable-cutting is a real thing and "over the top" streaming television is a viable business.

I've been thinking about cancelling it, however, because I rarely watch news or sports and every other channel seems to consist almost entirely of commercials and syndicated reruns. I cut the traditional cable so long ago that I'd forgotten just how bad it is. Streaming garbage is still garbage.

But then DIRECTV NOW kept adding channels, including free HBO — supposedly as a "thank you" for being an early adopter, but in reality as a "please stay, we beg you, everyone else is cancelling" — and all but one (NBC) of my local stations. I'm now getting the sort of package that costs $80–100/month from traditional cable, once you include HD charges, cable box charges, multi-outlet / multi-device charges, premium channel charges, and so on. The local stations in particular are a big deal because I live just far enough away from Detroit that I can't receive those stations with a digital antenna. (Digital is all-or-nothing, of course.)

Even if I did cancel the DIRECTV NOW, I'd have to switch to HBO NOW for $15/month in order to keep getting shows like Game of Thrones and Westworld. I'd save only $20/month. The streaming garbage is now so cheap that I kinda sorta don't mind it's garbage, and remaining subscribed contributes to the original point about cable-cutting.

Dilemma.

I always end up spilling things on myself, whether it's food or drink . Water bottles are the best way to prevent that but they're not a failsafe.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me who the twins (?) are playing? If there was a popular set of twin singers in 60s Jpop, I need to know so I can go look them up.

Today I learned that you cannot substitute chia seeds for flax seeds in a recipe, even though they are very similar in nutrition. Chia seeds absorb liquid, which leaves the rest of the recipe too dry.

In my case, I was making high-protein oatmeal — y'know, oatmeal with milk, eggs, banana, and seeds mixed in. Since the chia seeds absorbed the milk, the oats didn't cook properly and the eggs started to scramble rather than form a soft custard.

Even after accounting for this mistake, however, I won't make this recipe again. I made it hoping for something like banana bread in oatmeal form, and it… wasn't. Looking at other recipes that actually bill themselves as "banana bread oatmeal", the differences appear to be more milk, less banana, and added brown sugar. Hmm.

A few months ago I had a premise bento that had some cold roasted eggplant. I wanted to try to recreate it at home but couldn't find Japanese eggplants till yesterday when I stumbled upon some at my local farmers market. Now I can't remember what was in the eggplant to try and recreate it. Only that it tasted awesome and was roasted in some fashion. XD There might have been sesame seeds involved.

My brain is useless sometimes, I should have written it down.

Roasted eggplant plus sesame would make it some variation of baba ghanoush. Except, y'know, not processed into a dip.

Duck Chronicles
No sign of my ducks. But I did visit with the duck next to my auto mechanic’s premise since I was there. She is not as cooperative as my guys who seem to like to have their pictures taken, but not her.

It was a very short visit. She has a body guard.

There were two more dogs that didn’t even bother to come down off the porch. I had to leave fast due to all the barking from this one guy. XD

We went to a nearby dam today and noticed that all the ducks were gone (well, the mallards, there's another type of duck that hangs around there and they were all out and about). Unless a disaster has occurred it means they'll be nesting. Ducklings soon!

Also, the same dam is home to a lot of swans. About 30 of the silly things. They're pretty neat.

Turn around, bright eyes...

I'll probably go downtown to a viewing event at Adler Planetarium.

I'll probably watch on TV, since we won't be in the path of totality here. That, and everyone is sold out of the protective eyewear.

I don't think I've got any eclipse filter glasses, so I'll probably just wander outside, look around, and say, "OK - everything looks a bit shaded." then go back inside and have breadfast (I work at home on Mondays). XD
The L.A. area isn't going to get a whole lot of eclipse, anyway, so it's OK.

On the other hand, if a giant serpent actually was going to eat the sun, I would stand outside and watch the whole thing. :mikihead:
