My random though for the day: I've always felt that David Lynch's Dune (1984) was an underrated masterpiece.

My father had read the books — he had old paperback copies of the first four on the shelf in our library — so he wanted to see the movie when it was released, and he took me with him even though I was only 10 years old at the time. In fact, I think my father recognized that I was going to grow up to be a sci-fi geek regardless; he saw that I was already heavily into Star Wars, G. I. Joe, Transformers, and the X-Men. (Hey, it was 1984 and I was 10.) So, being the kind of father he was, he decided to nudge me towards more mature stuff "for my own good." Taking me to see Dune was part of that.

I loved it. I wasn't old enough to understand a lot of it nor to recognize its flaws, but it filled me with a sense of majesty and awe that I'd never experienced before. It truly felt… otherworldly.

Because of that experience, I quickly read all of the books for myself, including the two that were published soon after the movie was released. It's fair to say that was indeed the start of my interest in real, adult science fiction. At least I don't remember reading any of my father's other books before those; I remember a lot of Robert Heinlein and A. E. van Vogt being on the shelf, and I never touched that stuff.

After I read the books, of course, I could recognize all of the flaws in the movie. I could also see how the television miniseries — produced many years later by the SciFi Channel — were more faithful to the books in every way. Even more so, I could see how the '80s aesthetic of Lynch's movie simply didn't age well. But none of that ever quite dispelled that first sense of majesty and awe.

Anyhow, I mention all of this because I stumbled across this video today…

…and it reminded me of this…

Imagine being 10 years old and watching this in the theater, with the sound turned all the way up so that you feel the howling void of space right in your gut.

I'm in the subway and can't see those vidyas, but tldr Sean Young.

On a more serious note, those SF channel miniseries(es) were simply before their time. With the CG of 2017 and a more modern aesthetic when it comes to pacing, Netflix could really make an epic remake in a miniseries format.

(Edit: Let me add that Dune is probably my 1st or 2nd favorite book of all time, considering the first trilogy as a unit. The Honored Matre era stuff is good to me as well, just not on the same level. As a 12 year old I was flabbergasted by all the machinations and wheels within wheels, and even though it's not as magical as an adult I still appreciate and enjoy it. Certain things that impress fantasy readers in ASOIAF were done previously by Herbert.)

Spooky House update. It turns out …

that the house is not being moved after all. It is being restored. The cement basement floor and foundation was completed about a month ago. A big pile of gravel was there for some kind of drainage is now gone. The man in the picture was a truck driver just leaving after 7 PM in the dark. Last is the current status showing scaffolding being up.

I'd love to see that house once it's been completed! I'm sure it was pretty nice once upon a time.

I have summoned for jury service 3 times already, 5 if you include the all the times I had to go back because my excuses weren't enough to complete my services. Well, it was bound to happen, but I was selected to be a juror this past week. :fear:

Thankfully, it was a misdemeanor, so it only took a couple of days, but waking up early and traveling 40 miles is a dread. I respect those who does that daily.

In some ways, that house in its current stripped down state looks even spookier than if it were just sitting there untouched.
I think that I'm permanently disqualified from actually being on a jury because I was on a hung jury once - even though it was split pretty much down the middle, no prosecuting attorney wants to take the chance that I might turn out to be a chronic jury hanger (which I'm not).
I only need to do the 40 mile commute twice a week, but even that is a major pain in the butt. Doing it five days a week (which I did for years) never really gets easy.
(incidentally I'm using speech to text in Windows 10 to post this, and, while it generally does a good enough job so that I'm using it for work these days, it still slips up in some ways that surprise me - either that, or it just can't handle my boring and rather generic California accent.
For example, when I say " pain in the butt", the system actually manages to hear it as "pain in the baht". I have a lot of questions about that.)

I got dismissed from a jury selection yesterday as an alternate. It was the right decision by the judge.

I've been summoned... once. I sent a letter saying "I'm not able to do this because medical reasons" and haven't heard anything other than "okay sorry", lol.

I served as a juror on a murder trial in 2003 or 2004 (I’m not sure, it’s been a while). The majority of the testimony — as measured in actual time spent listening to it — was about establishing the chain of custody for each piece of forensic evidence. They somehow turned a case about crackheads murdering an old woman for pocket change into the most mind-numbing experience you can imagine. They don’t show that part on TV.

Anyhow, the defendant was clearly guilty of felony murder because he pleaded guilty to the robbery and the old woman was killed during the robbery, but we weren’t given that option...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_murder_rule_(Michigan)

If we wanted to get him for the murder, we had to find that he himself killed her, and unfortunately there were too many other people involved in the robbery for us to do that. It took us a day and half of deliberation, but we just couldn’t do it in the end.

Gotta hand it to the public defender, though — “The entire apartment building was full of crackheads and they were all in on it” is a brilliant way to create reasonable doubt.

I have yet to be summoned for jury duty. When/if that day comes, I'll have no issues asking my doctor for a note. :whistling:

Thinkin' about the hundreds of potential jurors they went through for the Martin Shkreli trial... :fear:

I've been on jury duty several times.
Spoiler: show
The most interesting time involved a man in his early 20s who supposedly did a gang hit on someone. In the US if you are charged with a crime and hire a private lawyer you will usually get off, but if a public defender is appointed for you by the government, you will almost certainly lose. This guy had a private lawyer. He came to court in a nice suit every day. His family was with him. They looked like churchgoers. The government had a bunch of witnesses lined up, most of them convicts currently serving sentences, but as each one was brought to the stand, they would suddenly forget the facts, deny being present, or otherwise contradict what they had privately told the prosecutors. Eventually the government had to withdraw the charges because the witnesses all recanted, and the case was dismissed.

(Note, in a real trial, unlike on TV, the testimony is rarely a surprise because the witnesses are deposed beforehand.)

Also in that same case during the voir dire (interviewing the potential jurors), one of the jury candidates said he needed to be excused from jury duty because he was in med school. The judge refused, saying he would write a note to the school. The student insisted, arguing he would fall too far behind. The judge again responded it wouldn't be a problem. Then the juror said, actually, he had been mugged once by a black man and so he knew there was no possible way for him to be impartial. And the judge was like, let me get this straight, you know for a fact you will discriminate against this defendant you have never met, because of him happening to be the same race as a totally different person? And you're planning on being a DOCTOR? And the guy, with a poker face, was like, yes. And so the judge released him, but vowed to write a letter to his med school as to his poor character and unsuitability as a doctor.
