Starra: Glad the surgery went well, and I hope her test results come back negative!

boinsie wrote:That seems super weird that it's taking so long to even start. What was the hold up?

The insurance company dinked around for a while, then ServPro dinked around even longer.
Thankfully, my dad just happened to have a contact on a car forum that has a business like that in Orlando. Insurance gave us the okay to ditch ServPro, so we went with this place called Rapid Response Team.

ServPro wouldn't have started until the 15th or 16th, which is about the time RRT will be finished.

We've been at a neighbor's house behind ours. They only typically come here on weekends (they live in Miami), but they won't be here this weekend. So that worked out perfectly.

 I got my poo-butt computer back yesterday. Why do I still feel sad you say? Because I took it back in this morning. I have it home again now and it's fine, better than ever but I still feel poo-butt. :hmmm: Where the hell are my ducks?! The garbage bin is gone and still no ducks. Last I saw them they were marching up the street.

"Small potatoes." I have little "potato problems" right now. I should and I am counting my blessings but I still feel poo-butt. Maybe a hot shower  will fix.

On a completely random note, it struck me that Paleolithic cave artists had some of the best memes.

Although prolly for cave dwellers a nice fat bovine was probably better than sex.

Thanks for the reminder for me to redo the cards. :fear:

Long time no see, Reina!

Finally got moved back into the house. My 70 year-old dresser started coming apart, so my room's kind of a mess. Dad slapped some glue on it and still has the clamps on.
I need my computer hooked back up, though, so I may take care of that later. I also got a new bed and it is mighty comfortable. :thumbs-up:

I've been feeling kinda meh for a few months. My boyfriend and I broke up, after almost 9 years. It wasn't messy and we are still really good friends but it hurts still, you know? I feel like I'm stuck in a rut because of it. I know I'll eventually heal but right now I just feel really down.

I got some interesting news today. I own a rental property on a depressed street. Today the mayor announced that they would be shutting down and rehabbing some 13 rental properties on the street (all of them eyesores). The article said that this two block street had had 1400 police calls in the last five years, maybe this will calm things down some.

So what foods should I try while I'm in Japan? I've tried quite a bit of Japanese foods over the years but I assume it's completely different in Japan, since a lot of the seafood etc will be different kinds.

I'm open to anything that isn't spicy (or poisonous, like fugu ). I love every kind of seafood I've ever tried (takoyaki is heavenly and I could eat eel forever) and I also adore noodles.

Also, I'm going to be in Osaka for a night and Kyoto for 2 nights so if there are any local specialties (other than takoyaki!) that y'all recommend let me know.

Be aware that Twitter has updated its privacy policy in order to make it easier to track you and share your personal information with advertisers. That's not quite how Twitter describes it, of course, but it is what it is.

The most important change is that Twitter will no longer honor the Do Not Track setting in your browser. Instead, you must go into your Twitter settings and opt out of such tracking. If you have no Twitter account and therefore no Twitter settings, you should periodically delete any Twitter cookies in your browser. This is one of those situations where they now can and probably will track you across other websites and devices in order to build a shadow profile of you. Simply viewing a webpage that contains a Twitter widget or bug will make you a "user" and therefore fair game.

You can also change your browser settings to block all third-party cookies — that is, cookies set by websites other than the one you're actually visiting — but that might cause other problems depending on the websites you regularly visit. I don't recommend it unless you really know what you're doing. For example, the DIRECTV Now website uses third-party scripts and cookies for its on-screen TV schedule. When I blocked those cookies, the website wouldn't load at all.

If you are so inclined, there are more thorough, more permanent solutions such as installing an ad-blocker, editing your HOSTS file, or setting up a custom DNS. Speaking for myself, I've already edited my HOSTS file to completely block Facebook and its subsidiaries. (That's in addition to blocking all the usual trackers and advertisers. Hat tip to MVPS.) I'm now considering doing the same for Twitter.

Starra wrote:So what foods should I try while I'm in Japan?

I'm probably not the best person to advise you on this, partly because I have a marked preference for spicy foods, and partly because I have very pedestrian, burger-and-fries sorts of tastes. When traveling, I gravitate toward foods that are cheap, fast, and usually not terribly exotic. In Japan this means things like ramen, curry rice, gyuudon (a bowl of rice topped with beef and onions), yakisoba (fried noodles), and even Western or Western-style fast food chains, where I like to try menu items that we don't have here in California.

You should of course have some sushi while you're there. One of my preferred sushi choices is negi-toro maki (fatty tuna and green onion roll), which tends to be considerably more expensive back home, when you can find it at all. Another thing that I often get in Japan, and which should be palatable even to the culinarily squeamish, is ebi ten-don: a bowl of rice topped with prawn tempura.

I usually have my last meal in Japan at a restaurant called Keisei Yuuzen (京成友膳) in Narita Airport. The food is good, and surprisingly inexpensive. Here's what I got there in 2011:

Image

That's an order of ebi ten-don, two pieces of maguro nigiri, two pieces of ebi nigiri, two pieces of negi-toro maki, miso soup, tsukemono (pickles), and an Asahi Jukusen beer, all for under ¥3000.

Last time I was in Japan, though, I stupidly forgot that the restaurant is OUTSIDE of the security checkpoint, and I was stuck with the lesser food options near my departure gate. D'OH!

Just from my experience with japanese food in Southern California, I'd add Okonomiyaki, which is fun to eat and fun to make (if you go to a restaurant where you can cook it at your table), and can take just about anything as a filling.

I think that's an unavoidable part of a break-up after a long-term relationship - after my ex-wife and I separated, even though if was friendly, and we both knew it was time to go our separate ways, it took quite a while to readjust. It helps to circulate socially and spend time with other people in a just-hanging-out-and-having-fun way (online or in person), because that helps you reconnect with the larger world, and to see the (very broad) range of possibilites that are there, but it does involve some ups and downs, no matter what.

I also think it helps a lot to give yourself permission to be a little (or more than a little) crazy for a while - feeling, thinking, and doing things that seem like they're out of your ordinary range - because that's part of readjusting. The person that you are/will become after and outside of that relationship is necessarily different from who you were when you were when you were in it. I still find myself coming up against who I was then vs. who I am now, in small and sometimes large ways - but I much prefer the way I am now, and probably couldn't go back to the way I thought and felt if I wanted to,

^ I have mixed feelings about okonomiyaki. The first couple of times I had it, I wasn't a fan; one of those times I even threw most of it out. But the Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki that I had at Goemon in Hiroshima two years ago was good.

Regardless of my feelings for the stuff, I was going to suggest that Starra should go to one of Tsunku's Karifuwa-dou (かりふわ堂) okonomiyaki restaurants, but they seem to be permanently closed.

My main experience with okonomoyaki is at a restaurant in Torrance (now closed) which was, at least, the only make-it-at-your-own-table okonomiyaki restaurant in the L.A. area. it's the kind of thing tht's the most enjoyable with a group, and half the fun comes from the confustion and general messiness (a bit like Korean BBQ). XD
But i did enjoy eating it - I think my favorite was mentaiko and cheese.
