This clip shows H!P member popularity over time as counted by Google search lookups. Particularly notable, the enduring popularity of Ayaya, Goto, and the former original Minimoni members. Also other than a tiny tick by Marian, Riho was the last H!P member with any level of popularity at all. As far as the general public goes, the current members of Morning might as well not exist. :(

I've spoken to a fairly good amount of Japanese folks from various backgrounds to practice my Japanese communication skills, and each time I make sure to ask them if they're familiar with Hello! Project. I'm well aware that not EVERYONE is into idols, but most of who I've met were only able to mention Minimoni, Ayaya, C-ute or songs like "Happy Summer Wedding" and "Renai Revolution 21". It made me a bit sad but when I look at how UF* currently promotes their idols and the content they put out, I'm not surprised. The fact that they haven't moved away from DVD Magazines for one is baffling. They rarely get promos or tie-ups. No proper Twitter accounts. There's no YouTube content that will draw in non-fans (take for example idol groups who release variety content on their channels). And to be frank a lot of the outfits they give the members for songs are outdated and bland. I will always love Hello! Project to death, and I don't think it's necessary for Hello! Project to drastically change things that make them unique, especially when some of these things are unique to J-Pop. However if the company ever wants to see a spike in popularity they're going to have to update a lot of their methods and take a look at why other groups are booming while they're not, especially during this time when it's easy to get drowned out in the influx of K-Pop and alt-idols :(

^I think how I came to know hello project was because Youtube recommended One • Two • Three to me, at the time I think that single was trending worldwide that even people outside of Japan had seen it. Perhaps it was due to MM transitioning into EDM music type singles mostly, which was much different to what the Platnium era and Golden Era had presented. Or perhaps it was the introduction of formation dancing - my point is it was something new and different, so maybe H!P may need to do something new and different with each of the groups. Perhaps make the new unit a revamped Kobushi Rock/Metal idol group or something I don’t know?

That'd be cool! However music is one thing, since that's subjective right. But when I was referring to alt-idols, I was mostly referring to the fact that those groups tend to give their members more freedom in terms of personal style, social media, lyric writing, ect. You also have idols groups that upload documentary style videos, vlogs, fun outings, and various other content on their channels for free. This really draws in non-fans, whereas releasing such stuff on DVDs is super limited, low in quality and will pretty much only be bought/viewed by existing fans. My take is that they trash all their old school ways and update it for easier, more modern, accessible things.

I also have a huge bone to pick with OMAKE, S&S, and Hello!Station. Which admittedly all release interesting stuff now and then. However I'm wondering how many of the members actually enjoy doing cooking corners, nature outings and talk segments as their sole content? Yet alone how many people enjoy watching it. But lemme stop before this gets moved to the rant thread haha
