^Aren't they lip-synching though? It's not really fair to compare that since all they have to do dance.

Also I think in terms of ability, I thought I remember people saying that Tsubaki is more similar to Berryz, while Kobushi is closer to how C-ute. Image wise I'd say it's the other way around.

Tsubaki Factory is aimed more to be another descendant of Berryz, not the equivalent of C-ute.

Lip syncing was a big thing for the groups back in the day. Even Minimoni did it. Berryz did it for the first few years too. But since this new age of Idol, UF has been trying to show themselves as a classy place that doesn't like Lip syncing unless absolutely necessary. The entire Morning Musume Green Live concert (from 2001) was lip synced! They'd never think of doing something like that today.

So Tsubaki is a product of the times. you're going to hear every sour note till they get it right, eventually.

I would say that especially Minimoni did it. XD
I feel like it was around W time-frame that the established groups started regularly singing live. Even so, Kirari (almost?) never did, and even today oftentimes the newer members of groups will sometimes have a backing track while the other girls don't.

I majorly appreciate the live singing, though. That's a big reason I was never able to get into AKB.

Haha, yeah, well, ya know, that's just like uh my opinion man, but I think they were good, just more on an idol curve than in an absolute sense. For example surely Ayumin and Riho '15 would blow their chibi counterparts out of the water. I'd hope most would agree they're much, much improved now, yet that's just a nicer way of saying that they were much worse back in 2012. Maybe at the time we were dazzled by the shock of it, but I don't think it made that big of an impact on their long-term visibility. If it's legendary, it's mostly legendary to us. Unlike say Chisato's self-covers of Dance de Bakoon, which really pulled her from near-obscurity to being in the public eye. If anything I feel a teeny-tiny bit sorry for Fairies since gamely getting humiliated by Momusu wasn't able to budge them out of 4th-tier status. They've had mostly dismal sales, and their last single, Soushisouai Destination, sold something in the area of 30k copies. One would never imagine they beat out 2NE1 and Super Girls for best new artist when they started.

It's still my opinion that, though they may not have improvised together as well, Fairies dancing skill was far higher in that clip. I know nothing about dancing, but as a random viewer (hell, as a viewer biased towards MM) that's how it comes off to me.

I still can't get over how amazing this song is. Everything surrounding it was so surprising and fresh!!
