I'm talking about the state of the idol industry, not my personal preferences.

Saying "the state of the idol industry" like that implies that this isn't how it's always been? Go back and watch some Onyanko Club, man.
Also, the show's gotten much better from an "making girls do embarrassing things" standpoint. The first two episodes were arguably a little that-way (though even then, I would have loved to see H!P girls participate, and not for any pervy reasons)... but besides that there have been... 2 episodes where they had the wiggle off a bed? OKay, so those weren't terribly watchable. But honestly? This is the same type of thing the AKB girls do on their show, and they're supposedly "top tier" idols.

My main complaint is that much of what they do on the show is borderline boring, and that the only thing that would make it more interesting is if they were doing it with girls I'm already familiar with. ^^;

My mistake. I should have said the nature of the idol industry.

Indeed, which is why I believe much of AKB's popularity is simply a fad. They happened to be the right group at the right moment to get picked up by the wave.

To be fair, it's not much different for them than it was for UFA in 1999-2000, but at least UFA has, over the long term, tried to develop real talent and maintain the wholesomeness of its girls.

My understanding was that you didn't mean personal preference, but in terms of the how the industry is generally perceived. Like my take would be:

1st tier) Well-regarded professional actresses/soloists = Erika Toda, Chizuru Ikewaki, Kou Shibasaki, Ayaka Hirahara, AKB48 front girls
2nd tier) Top idol group girls, ok pop singers, TV actresses = AKB48 generally, Momusu, Ueto Aya  , Perfume, Saki Fukuda
3rd tier) TV show talents, retired 2nd tier girls, unfamous idol groups = MISONO, Becky, Hitomi Yoshizawa, Berryz Kobo, Momoclo
4th tier) Gravure/sexy photobook idols, Girls circling the orbit of 2nd/3rd tier, but unable to break into them = The Possible, Britney Hamada  , Saaya, MEGUMI, Sayaka Isoyama
5th tier) AV idols well regarded enough to star in lo-budget horror movies or to release a crappy single/Nude photobook idols/fallen idols = Risa Kasumi, Yuma Asami, ASAMI, Sora Aoi, Ai Kago :inlove:
6th tier) AV generally, the most desperate of idol wannabes or fallen idols = Rina Nakanishi, Tsuntube auditioners :mikihead:
7th tier) Whatever the japanese version of two girls one cup is. :puke:

Yeah, that sounds about right. But frankly, I don't even know half of those…

Wouldn't Sora Aoi be higher? She used to be fairly big (in more ways than one! *rimshot*), at least fourth tier. Did she fall and I just didn't hear about it?

^ Lol, you're right. Honestly I kept moving her between 3, 4 and 5 but just gave up. Those other tier 5 girls were in awesomely bad popcorn fodder like The Machine Girl and Robogeisha. Robogeisha is on topic because the announcer reminds me of Tsunku doing his Engrish voice. :whistling:

(Vastly expanded and more-offtopic video description of the girls in my previous post)
Spoiler: show
About the other girls:
Erika Toda, I presume, needs no introduction, being one of the most famous actresses in Japan, but she's not above bringing the hotness:

Chizuru Ikewaki is considered one of the best actresses of her generation. Recently in Sword of Desperation, one of her standout roles is the titular character in Josee

Kou Shibasaki, best known in the west for her role in Battle Royale, is in my opinion an excellent pop vocalist

Ayaka Hirahara is basically Japan's answer to Celine Dion, and could possibly make it in the west. If Celine Dion type singing were still popular here. XD

I actually know a woman who worked with my beloved Uetty on a dorama. I would marry that woman just to say I was married to someone who knew Ueto Aya, that's how much I love her.

Saki Fukuda is just a generically pretty dorama actress/singer, I just picked her as being an unremarkable 2nd tier member.
Here she is singing something boring.

MISONO is Koda Kumi's vastly more talented lil sister, and frequently shows up on London Hearts and other shows because of her down to earth personality and easy laugh.
Here she is covering "Complicated."

Becky, I'm sure you know of. But just in case... :-P

Hitomi Yoshizawa is a somewhat popular former athlete turned LGBT activist. Probably not well-known outside of specific circles.

Britney Hamada is a supposedly former homeless girl who got a beauty makeover and started appearing on TV, although her 15 minutes of fame are already over.

Saaya, well known for having big boobs at 13.

MEGUMI, well known for having big boobs at 33.
Her career was tragically cut short when she didn't adapt to the internet and retained a mononym like "MEGUMI" which makes her nearly impossible to find on search engines.

Sayaka Isoyama has been in literally every gent magazine in Japan.

The tier five girls fit into a certain category of porn actress who has become kind of famous in RL, enough to move into crappy B-movie territory, but keeps doing porn. This doesn't even exist in the US, does it?
Examples of said movies follow:
Machine Girl

Robogeisha

Kyonyuu Dragon

Ai Kago is a former singer known best for her serial seduction of much older men, as in the following clip:

Rina Nakanishi is an ex-AKB girl who went on to make a few humiliating porn videos under the name Riko Yamaguchi. I can't offhand think of anybody from any pop realm who's fallen so far.

When we mere mortals think of a BBQ, we think of marinated, charred meats and vegetable sides drowning in mayonaise. Tsunku, proving that he's superior to you in almost every way, pulls out a stick and makes baumkuchen, a dessert widely considered difficult to make even in a controlled kitchen.
