About Riho seems cocky/arrogant : that's the way the show works. Everyone is shown off that way. even those with really bad handwriting are saying stuff like "My calligraphy is the best".
..... I know because I watch it almost every week :p

They tried do Japanese style game shows in the past on American TV, let's not ever, ever talk about those. I still carry second hand embarrassment. Japanese style variety shows, ugh.

I'd love to take a Japanese calligraphy course, might help me better to write out the characters.

American TV shows seem... not that great from the few I've watched, tbh. Then again, most TV shows aren't very good. I watch 4 non-anime series in total (QI, Top Gear, Whose Line & South Park).

I'd rather not talk about (or read xD) my own handwriting orz.

I'm 99.9% sure mine is worse. I was basically made (well, I suggested it, but they were like "SURE!") to use a computer for school exams because the teachers couldn't read my handwriting .

My Japanese handwriting is okay, I think. Except that I can't write kanji at all.

It's also difficult to imagine something like Japanese idols existing in America. Young female celebrities in the US tend to have make-up thick on their face and hair obviously professionally done, and having a celebrity boyfriend would just add to the status as a popular/cool girl. The type of song they'll sing is also another thing.


I heard that learners of Japanese/Chinese tend to write kanji pretty nicely because we'd write out all the details, whereas native speakers would just scribble some parts in the characters. Also, we tend to try to learn how to write based on how printed characters look. One of my Chinese friends said my Chinese writing looks like it's typed, and I thought the same about her English writing.

That's a good point. Similarly, I noticed that the older contestants on the show tended to have a more cursive style of handwriting than the younger ones.


Next week (July 9th), Tsugunaga Momoko will be one of the guests on Nakai Masahiro no Mi ni Naru Toshokan. The theme is 美イングリッシュ検定 "Beautiful English Test", so we can expect some hilarity.
